Viranka with a cab and a donkey with a barrel, island of Vir

This sculptural scene embodies the everyday life of the island of Vir, when water and basic necessities were a precious resource. “Viranka sa kabom” depicts a woman carrying a bucket (kaba) – a symbol of hard work and care for the household – while “donkey with a barrel” represents an indispensable helper in the transport of water, oil or wine. Donkeys have been a key part of island logistics for centuries, especially in periods when infrastructure did not exist and wells and springs were far away.

The sculpture evokes the spirit of togetherness and endurance of the local population. The woman and the animal together form an inseparable whole that speaks of the balance between man and nature, but also of resourcefulness in the harsh conditions of life on the karst terrain. Today, as an artistic motif, this scene reminds visitors of the authentic Dalmatian identity and the values that shaped life on Vir – work, patience and connection with the environment.
