Mediterranean monk seals, Drvenik

The sculpture of the Mediterranean monk seal in Drvenik is inspired by one of the most endangered marine species – the Mediterranean monk seal . Once a common inhabitant of the Adriatic, this rare species has now almost disappeared from our region, which gives it a strong symbolic value in an artistic and ecological context. The depiction of the monk seals is a reminder of the wealth of natural heritage that was once part of the everyday life of coastal communities.

The sculpture acts not only as an aesthetic element, but also as a silent message about the need to preserve the sea and its inhabitants. Located along the coast, it connects space, history and nature, evoking a time when these animals were part of the local identity. Today, as an artistic motif, the Mediterranean monk seal becomes a symbol of the fragility of the ecosystem, but also of the hope that the balance between man and nature can be restored.
