Mate Svjetski and the dog Globus, Vrgorac

The sculpture “Mate Svjetski and the dog Globus” in Vrgorac is inspired by a local legend about an unusual traveler who, according to legend, traveled the world, while always remaining connected to his homeland. The figure of Mate Svjetski symbolizes curiosity, freedom and the constant pursuit of discovering new things, while his faithful dog Globus further emphasizes the motif of travel and loyalty.

This sculpture combines elements of humor, identity, and collective memory, creating a recognizable narrative that transcends local boundaries. Through its simple yet evocative form, the work recalls the importance of stories that shape community. At the same time, it represents a fusion of the real and the symbolic – a man going “into the world” and a dog named after the world itself, emphasizing the universality of the motifs of travel and belonging.
